As the baby class moves to the middle class the children require more challenges in all areas of school. The planning for this group is more stimulating and engaging.
In Language, the children will move on to phonics and writing of the lower and upper case letters of the alphabet along with revision of Jolly phonic books 1,2,3 and book 4. Perfecting the formation is the focus for this group. As the letters are learnt, reading practice begins with the introduction of the reading schemes. The children also enjoy many activities for developing speech and vocabulary. The aim is now to improve their vocabulary, fluency and speak complex sentences with confidence. Story time, songs and rhymes and listening to instructions is part of the daily program. The technique of creative writing is introduced in this class as preliminary to actual writing. The children are encouraged to draw simple representations of their observations and impressions. They identify what they have drawn to the teacher while she records. Sometimes they also write the first letter of the word.
Math consists of different concepts; rote counting, number writing, value, money, name the shape and colour activities. Flash cards and teaching aids are the medium for learning numeracy. The children get to practice in activity books specially designed for them. This group becomes experts at pattern writing. They will be able to sort and match a variety of objects by color shape and size
Every week there is an exciting theme. The children grasp the knowledge through observation and learning from books, charts and stories.
Creative development is all about expression and development of the aesthetic sense. We are aware of the child’s inner need to explore their surroundings, wanting to be a part of and experience everything the environment offers. Hence we provide stimulating activities in art and craft, song, music dance and drama, shapes, colors, and textures are vital part of the child’s development.
Outdoor play in Physical Education is slightly more challenging and competitive. Interesting racing games and athletics are planned for this age group to develop the gross motor skills.
